Gundam GP01

1/144 scale resin kit conversion

A JAF-CON only resin kit that can be built into either GP01 or GP01Fb. In general, it looks pretty good and the size goes well with the GP03S kit (in otherword, it also ovrsize beyond scale). There are some prominent doenside, however. The feet and backpack included are just huge. Ithey could almost fit a 1/100 kit! The head is also too narrow and pointy.

My primary game plan was to replace all end of each limb (head, hands, feets and backpack) with other stuff. This should resulted in significant changes in the overall look of the finished kit.

And of course, I plan to add the usual assortments of details. :-)

Head

On the left is the replacement head from a Gundam head collection kit from JAF-CON. On the right is the stock head, which I felt is too narrow.

To fit it in, I needed to make some extension to the neck with a few layers of plastic plate.

Legs

A modified version of the GP-03Ss's foot is now used in place of the resin. I added the vernier in the sole. Sole pattern will be added also.

Since the plastic foot has a lot less in height compare to the resin one, I compensate this with the 3mm added to the upper leg (notice the layers of plastic in upper leg, in the middle).

The stock plastic substance control system part (the cylinder thing on the foot) is discarded. The one being used here is sawed from those unused resin foot.

The ankle guard is currently removable (while I don't suppose it was intended to be). But it will need an additional rear guard for GP01 design. So this is gonna be a little tricky, since I need to paint the inside first before wotking akwardly to add the rear plate (the filing/sanding need to be careful not to hit into the painted area).

I wanted to retain the ball joint of the GP03S kit. There's a little problem in that, the pegged half had to be cut from GP03S's lower leg and resulting in a very short peg. I filled it with epoxy (the part was hollow, being a plastic kit) and make an extended peg with plastic rod.

The finished proportion of the lower body part.

Sole

Some detail-up with the feet include the sole pattern with 2 levels of depth, and a burner.

Skirt Armor

Here's how attach the armors, using spring. Notice some plastic plate reenforcement sloppily placed on the waist. Yeah, they're half-assed, but get the job done.

Arms

Due to the upper leg having 3mm increase in height, the upper arms also need some extension to keep the overall proportion correct. I originally went overboard and added 2mm to them. This results in the finger reaching beyond the knee joint area when standing up straight. I later reduced the spacer down to 1mm.

The blue hand here is a copy of one of Kotobukiya's hand (same type as the one in the image below). I'm just too cheap to buy more. The small holes on it, are use for attching beam rifle via 0.5mm brass rod.

Hands

The hands the kit came with are pretty stubby. On the left is a replacement I'll be using. Much more elegant...

Backpack

The back pack suffers the same problem as the foot; it's way too large. Consequently, an old back pack from Bandai's kit is used instead. With some modifications, of course. Most noticeably, I filed off most the angle of the plastic part.

Here, the sabre hoders are made from plastic plate, with some sort of nozzlr part stamped on top. The sabre can be removed through brass rod.

The thruster here is a replacement I had, as usual, left lying around.

Shield

The kit lacks the magazine packs for the shield. What I do here is copy Gundam Mk.II's upgrade part to use here instead.

Not that this project is based on the Bandai kit in anyway, but I just thought this look amusing. :-)
