Zaku II

(roughly) 1/220 Bandai "The Gundam" candy toy

Compare with out-of-the-box on the right.

Not long after the MG starts to come out, Bandai started to put out a miniature version based on same MG computer protorype (proportionwise) as a candy toy. This is the series called "The Gundam". The first batch of the series include both the normal type Zaku and Char's, Gundam, and Alex. The notable thing is that they're made out of plastic, and not rubber. This make them ideal for fooling around with.

My brother had grabbed me the whole series a few years ago, where I'm pretty sure he bought it mainly to get the candy himself and leave these "freebies" for me. :D Now, after enjoying what little candy the kit provides, I began inspecting the kit. To my delight, they all seem to be at the exact 1/220 scale. I had wanted a Zaku for my 1/220 diorama for quite some times, so these guys come in very handy for a bit modifying.

It would have been a discredit to some people if I claim that I came up with such "brillaint" idea all by myself. ;) A couple of months before I got the toy, Louis Law (of Spring Action) had shown me pictures of the ones he's been working on equipped with 1/35 human weapons (very cool!). So there, Louis, I stole your idea!

There won't be much improvement over articulation. I'm concentrating on selecting parts that suits the look I'm after best, which is pretty far from the typical look of MG kit it comes in.

The head and spike definitely has got to go. The rest is changed to reflect what I did with 1/144 Char Zaku. Therefore, I also changed the feet, shoulder, shield, and a few other places. Most of which are copy from a 1/220 B-Club kit of Zaku (F2 type).

You'll notice a lot of flaw and patches on the copied parts, this is due mainly for the fact that I was too lazy during the mold making phase. Rather than design a layout to have the casting flow thoroughly, I simply plugged the whole part tree onto the clay to form the layout. Which, knowingly, is not going to be filled up in full without vacuum chamber of some sort, but I only need one or 2 copies anyway. Probably not the time and effort.

Installing needs some work, but since movability is not a concern here, and the scale is so small, it was a breeze. All that is left now is just cleaning up and adding detail, which should be a whole lot of fun.

The one on the left is the resin kit of B-Club's 06F2
